The Gawai festival has always been one of the celebrated festivals in Sarawak. The festival originated from the folklore that tells of the adventure of men travelling to the world of the gods and spirits. Later the spirits are invited to join in a feast of their subsequent journey to the world of mortals.   This festival is being celebrated at the end of harvesting season and the start of a new farming season. The Dayak community celebrates Gawai in their villages and urban homes.  Another highlight of the festival is an ethnic beauty pageant. The beauties are normally maidens who possess grace, pose and charm, articulate with a good knowledge of Sarawak’s culture and heritage. She must be, in short, a woman of substance.  A culturally enchanting show, it is an experience not-to-be-missed for its sights and sounds. This  celebration  of  unity,  aspiration  and  hope  for  the  Dayaks mark  the  end  of  the  rice  harvest  and  ushers  in  another year of bountiful goodness. During this festival, almost everyone dresses in traditional costumes while the elders perform traditional rites.

Mini Clinic

Although it had been 2 months past but still I want to share the experiences.

The fourth day, as one of the program’s objective which was to figure out the prevalence of diseases, we conducted a simple but common medical checkup such as history taking, Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure (BP), blood glucose, physical examination and consultation.

The programme started at 9.00 am and finished at 3.00pm.  The programme went smoothly on time and discipline was maintained and well co-ordinated. It was conducted at “ruai” of the long house. All the villagers underwent physical examination. We worked with patients, helped organize the index cards that contain patient medical information and consulted with Dr Reza and Dr. Mohanad to work out follow-up care for patients and families. Their findings were noted and comments were written. The main focus was on hypertension, diabetes and bronchial asthma, and on adolescent questionnaire. From medical checkup that had been done, we noted that some of the patient had serious health problem, so Dr Reza suggested to write a report and passed it to Mr Awang Ismardi for further action. We also found some interesting case on metastases lung cancer and tumor at nasal region that compressed the nerve.

After medical checkup session ended at 3.00pm, the activity then continues with visit to the clinic Nanga Setamang which located just in front of the river and the participant had to cross the river to go there. Our arrival was welcomed by the nurses since Mr Awang Ismardi was not available during that time. We visited around the clinic and took photos. By 5.30pm we return to the village and rest. By 8.30pm, we gathered at penghulu’s house to have meeting with Dr Reza regarding to the activities of the day.

third day

On the third day, 22nd March, at Kampung Nanga Setamang woke up as early as 6.30am. Right after breakfast and briefing from the program director the second activity at the village was Rapid Rural Appraisal which was known as RRA begun. RRA was systematic but semi-structured activities carried out in the field by a multidisciplinary team. All the data recorded assisted in formulating and conducting activities for the health promotion. Based on the information obtained from the questionnaires and also observation, we managed to have an idea about the health talk to be conducted in the village. Through this RRA we noted that most of the villagers had hypertension, fungal infection and some serious illness.

After that, we visit to SK Nanga Tibu to grant for the permission for the next activity which was health education for the kids. It took about an hour to reach to the school by walking. Christpine and Amalina went to the office to meet the deputy headmaster and told the deputy of their intention. We spend a few minutes mingled with the kids and the staff there before return back to the village.
arrived at the school after an hour jungle trekking..
After lunch, we were divided into two groups for the evening session. One group was involved with the activity at the school, and the other group had activity with the children in the village. For the session with primary school students which involves students from standard 4, 5 and 6. The activities were consisting on colouring competition, simulation on brushing teeth and other exciting games. We showed all the students the proper way of washing hands and brushing teeth. The demonstrations were conducted by Kavimathy Sukumaran and Noor Halimahton Sa’adiah, All of the students were supplied with toothbrush and toothpaste. The other group members were the facilitators. Meanwhile, the washing hand demonstration was the second. All the students were provided with hand wash soap for practice. The students were also been briefed a general importance of the demonstrations. The whole demonstration took about 2 hours. Other than that, Dr Reza performed basic medical check up on the teachers and staffs of the school.

On the other hand, another group which led by Amalina and Mohanapriyah conducted the activity with the children at the village very well. They started the event at 4.30pm. About 32 children at the age of 1 year old to 10 years old participated in the program. The children mostly were accompanied by their mothers. The aim was to interact with them. The activity that conducted was coloring and balloon presentation. This event was a success because the group members managed to communicate with the children and joined them in the coloring activity. As a reward, Mohana did the balloon twisting and presented to each and every of the participant. By 6.30pm, the event ended with the balloon presentation. It was an awesome evening with the children. The children had a wonderful time and they were happy to see them smiling all throughout the event.

By 8.00pm they had their dinner prepared by Hartini and Najwa. The last activity of the day was discussion and post mortem session with Dr.Reza. During this session, we gave a brief report about RRAs’ result and summarize our findings. Other than that, we were so touched with the efforts and determination of the children in order to gain knowledge. At the young age they had to stay away from their parent. At 10.00pm, the discussion ended.objectives and goals, and determine the population of interest based on the information gained from the area.

Last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to wish a ''HAPPY TEACHER"S DAY" to all the lecturers especially our mentor Dr Reza. we found guidance, friendship, discipline and love, everything, in one person. And that person is you. Thanks for being a true mentor of our hearts. We will always be grateful to you for your support.

Pam’s Clipart Images

There is no love, like a mother's love,
no stronger bond on earth...
like the precious bond that comes from God,
to a mother, when she gives birth.

A mother's love is forever strong,
never changing for all time...
and when her children need her most,
a mother's love will shine.

God bless these special mothers,
God bless them every one...
for all the tears and heartache,
and for the special work they've done.

When her days on earth are over,
a mother's love lives on...
through many generations,
with God's blessings on each one.

Be thankful for our mothers,
for they love with a higher love...
from the power God has given,
and the strength from up above.

Our mother is the sweetest and
Most delicate of all.
She knows more of paradise
Than angels can recall.
She's not only beautiful
But passionately young,
Playful as a kid, yet wise
As one who has lived long.

Her love is like the rush of life,
A bubbling, laughing spring
That runs through all like liquid light
And makes the mountains sing.

Second Day

Second day, 21st March 2011- Journey to Ulu Engkari Batang Ai

Today.. we continue our journey to Ulu Engkari Batang ai. Everyone woke up as early as 4.00am that morning and while waiting for the rest to be ready, i prepared a simple breakfast for them, bread with tuna and jam seem it will be a long journey to go. About 4-5 hours from Kuching by van and 1 and half hour by boat  but depend on the level of the water.

Right after everyone has ready, we started our journey, headed to Batang Ai by 7.00am. It's rainy a long the way to Batang Ai.First one hour or may be less we reached Serian. Ariff seem excited, he showed us his old school just behind St' Theresa Church. what to say.. come down memory land..hihihi

In the meanwhile, i messaged papa that we on the way to batang ai and ask him to wait for us at the jetty with all the stuff that i had request him to bring along.

The next hour.. sound of "s-hungry-la rhythm" begun to appear. I know everyone is hungry like crazy especially our "hungry princess" (you know who) hmmmm..  the only thing i can said is.. "sabar ye" huhhu... till we reached at Lachau rest-stop. This rest stop is about 120 km from Kuching. We stop here for a while. while waiting for the others to make their visit to PT for "weewee", we walked to the "Tamu" @ market. looking for something to eat, just lo slow down the sound of "s-hungry-la rhythm". By 9.45am we continue our way to Batang ai. heww...still have few hours to go. Even though that special sound slow down a bit, i felt a bit guilty.. i should aware and concern bout that. Pity them..have to bear for the special sound with them. Sorry hungry princess.. i know your stomach need some work, right after we reach Batang ai you can pampered your stomach. Papa was already there waiting for us with the lunch..

At 10.30am, we stop at Engkilili for police report. Tempat jatuh lagi dikenang, inikan pula tempat bermain. My house (which i love to stay in rather than at kuching)  is actually next to this police station on the right side.

finally..we safely reached at Batang ai jetty. Im so excited.. and i excited to see my papa. I miss him really. But i have to bear for a while because Mr Yiu kim beng (senior MA), Mr awang ismardi (MA) and Penghulu Rentap was waiting for us since a hour ago for the first session of this program which is briefing about the health status in the area. Sorry for keep you all waiting for our arrival. Anyhow.. thank you so much Mr Yiu, Mr awg, and Penghulu.

For a moment i thought that they might be forget about their 's-hungry-la rhythm" because the beautiful scenery attract they more. Enjoy the nice view guys!!!

Before we continue our journey to ulu engkari, let have a lunch first. Hungry princess... eat well ya..hihihi..

sarawakians sangat mengalu-alukan kedatangan kalian ke sarawak..

Info: Batang Ai
This area covers the Batang Ai river and its tributaries (including the Engkari and Delok), which feed the massive lake formed by the Batang Ai Hydro Scheme. It is the ancestral home of the Iban in Sarawak and was the last area in Sarawak to come under the control of the White Rajahs, after decades of dogged resistance. Many longhouses here are built in a traditional manner, and the people here are very proud of their well preserved customs and lifestyle. Many of the older men have spectacular tattoos all over their bodies, and are pleased to pose for photographers.
